The Silent Killer

Blue_hills_1 Gum (periodontal) disease could be called a silent killer. There is usually little or no discomfort, yet if left untreated, it can cause you to lose your teeth. It is gum disease and not tooth decay that is the leading cause of adult tooth loss. The American Dental Association states that 75% of all adults will develop some form of gum disease during their lives.  Recent studies are also showing evidence that link infections in the mouth to other health problems.

While more research needs to be done to say definitively that people with periodontal disease are at higher risk for developing heart disease, stroke, uncontrolled diabetes, preterm births and respiratory disease, we do know that periodontal disease is a bacterial infection, and all infections are cause for concern.
